Connaught is essentially the only general hospital in Freetown and the hospital for the Medical School. The doctors of Sierra Leone had decided to go on strike in the middle of a revolution. Medecins sans Frontieres sent a surgical team to work in this hospital to treat the maimed and the casualties and to deal with emergency-only surgery.

Part of the terror campaign was the amputation of limbs. High amputations did not survive. There are many children in Sierra leone with no hands.

Typical of the infected bullet wounds -- open fracture several days old, infected, and had to be treated with the minimal supplies available to us -- but the remarkable ability to survive was amazing.

Wound of chest and abdomen, chest severely infected and draining pus.
