RWANDA is a beautiful country, located in the centre of Africa, with a climate very suitable to European life. The Belgians had colonised it with Burundi and until the time of the uprising, Belgian doctors were working in excellent hospitals. We don't know the psychologic mechanisms that turn neighbor against neighbor, but with the excuse of tribal struggle persons of predominanly Hutu origin set about slaughtering those of Tutsi origin.
As the surgeon in a small MSF contingent, we were the first into Kigali, where we found the Bangladesh military medical group attached to the UN mission were doing the best possible. We were then re-located to the north to work in conjunction with the Tutsi military returning from refuge in Uganda. There we set up the equivalent of a Forward Surgical Unit, locating it in a school. The bodies were still on the ground, our tour of the killing fields was conducted by "Paul."
RWANDA: A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY
BUT LIKE IN SO MANY BEAUTIFUL COUNTRIES, THE PEOPLE DO HORRIFIC THINGS TO EACHOTHER
PROBABLY A REVENGE KILLING
