This was another project of Orthopaedics Overseas (see the Vietnam section for explanation). Our purpose was to create a small nucleus for a department of orthopaedic surgery. The country was at war, the army each night dumped a truckload of casualties in the Black Lion (University) Hospital. Facilities for treating them were poor in what had been an outstanding department in Africa prior to a communist take-over. In fact, this was another of those wars fought by Africans as surrogates for the major Western powers.
