Jane Austen would not be pleased, but to abuse her opening line of Pride and Prejudice, one might say:    It is a truth universally acknowledged that there are mothers who kill their children.

Possibly there is a mother in the very act of killing her child as this sentence is read, and certainly there will in the future be mothers who will kill their children.

The Purpose Of This Book

We must gain from the past an understanding of the issues to be controlled in the future. The book is not intended to titillate the salacious nor to analyze past miseries as an academic exercise. It is written with the intention of damage control, to minimize future harm.
